Azul Bio creates Coral Microbiome Boosters (CMBs) from the microbiomes of coral to improve their resilience to an array of the most critical ecological challenges. These treatments are cheaper and faster to develop than traditional restoration approaches, and are deployed at scale, saving corals in nurseries and hundreds of hectares of existing reef.

Rapid Coral Microbiome Booster Development

Azul Bio is developing the technology to preserve and restore marine ecosystems and expand the productivity of marine industries at scale. We are accomplishing this by leveraging natural marine microbiomes to create regenerative CMBs that work with the habitat to restore ecological function and increase its tolerance to climate change and human impact.

Through the use of cutting-edge culturing methods and high-throughput technologies, our microbiome booster engineering platform allows for rapid testing, analysis, and coral microbiome booster assembly.

The CMBs are embedded in a biodegradable material which slowly releases the treatment shortly after contact with coral tissue. CMBs and the delivery material can be easily mass produced as dispersible particles and sprayed on nurseries or wild reef by trained divers or watercraft.

Once applied to coral, it only takes a few days for the coral microbiome booster to change its physiology, increasing cellular repair, stress protection, immune response, and other traits that provide significant protection from environmental threats.

Our treatment can be applied to coral nurseries on land or in the ocean, as well as at large-scale on natural reefs.
